Telangana’s ancient history is rich with the rule of powerful dynasties like the Satavahanas, Ikshvakus, and Vakatakas


Satavahana Dynasty (1st century BCE – 3rd century CE)

  • First major dynasty of Telangana and Deccan region
  • Capital: Pratishthana (modern-day Paithan, Maharashtra)
  • Founder: Simuka; Greatest ruler: Gautamiputra Satakarni
  • Extended rule over present-day Telangana, Maharashtra, AP
  • Promoted trade with Rome, used punch-marked coins
  • Supported Buddhism – Amaravati and Nagarjunakonda flourished

 Ikshvaku Dynasty (3rd century CE)

  • Successors of Satavahanas in eastern Telangana and Andhra
  • Capital: Vijayapuri (Nagarjunakonda)
  • Known for Buddhist architecture and Vihara construction
  • Rulers followed both Buddhism and Vedic traditions

 Vakataka Dynasty (250–500 CE)

  • Controlled parts of northern Telangana
  • Allied with Gupta Empire (intermarriage with Chandragupta II's daughter)
  • Promoted Hinduism, Sanskrit, and Vedic learning

 Megalithic Culture in Telangana (Pre-Satavahana)

  • Found in districts like Nalgonda, Warangal, Karimnagar
  • Megalithic burial sites – dolmens, cist graves, stone circles
  • Evidence of early iron tools and weapons

 Important Ancient Sites in Telangana

  • Phanigiri: Buddhist stupa and monastery (Nalgonda)
  • Nelakondapalli: Early Buddhist site with coins and sculptures
  • Kotilingala: Satavahana fort and coin minting site (Karimnagar)
